der SummerSchool: Biomass and Coal – Two Carbon Fuels of
Different Ages: German and Indian Perspectives
Termin: 09 July to 18 July 2016
The nine-day program addresses a variety of aspects related to the sustainable and clean use of biomass and coal. Lectures by German and Indian representatives from academia, industry, and politics will introduce into technical, environmental, economic, and political aspects of the supply and use of these two solid fuels. These lectures will be designed to foster a lively discussion between the participants. Furthermore, the participants will carry out projects related to the topics of the lectures. Here, the participants are expected to team up with their fellow students with different academic backgrounds to achieve fruitful results based on interdisciplinary teamwork. The program is complemented by topic-related excursions.
The course is open to German* and Indian Master and PhD students in academic fields of engineering, environmental and social sciences (specializiation related to the topic of the summer school is desirable). The number of participants is limited to a maximum of 30 (15 German / 15 Indian).
Interested students may apply with the following: (1) a cover letter with residential contact details, a description of the applicant’s scientific interests and motivation for attending the course, (2) academic CV, (3) a letter of recommendation from a university professor/lecturer (for Indian Students: from the Head of Department), (for German Students: from Professor or Supervisor). (4) Copy of Passport.

Applications received after this date will not be considered. A confirmation mail will sent to the applicants immediately. If the applicant does not receive a confirmation mail he needs to inquire immediately.
The letter of recommendation from a professor or lecturer can be
turned in after this date.
Evaluation of applications and admission

The IGCS – including the schools – is part of the “A New Passage to India” initiative funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Indian participants of the Summer School 2016 receive a travel grant (575 EUR), German students receive a travel reimbursement. All students receive a per diem and lump sum for further expenses.
The resource personnel for the Summer School includes IGCS Professors, lecturers of TU Berlin and other selected experts.
Participants will work in groups of up to 4-5 members to develop small research projects, prepare reports on their findings and present them to the supervisors for discussion.
